A little history
Athens is where a lot of the Western world was invented. In the 5th century BC it was the richest and most powerful of the Greek city-states, and under Pericles it built the Parthenon and the rest of the Acropolis at the same time that Socrates, and then Plato and Aristotle, were arguing philosophy in its streets and inventing democracy. Rome, then Byzantium, then the Ottomans each took the city, and the Parthenon served as a church and a mosque before a Venetian shell hit the gunpowder the Ottomans stored inside it in 1687 and blew the roof off. When Greece won independence, Athens became the capital of the new kingdom in 1834, then a small town of a few thousand people, and grew into the sprawling modern city that now wraps around those ancient rocks.
