September is the best value month in the European city break calendar. The weather is still summer, the school crowds are gone, and hotel prices drop 20 to 40 percent from their August peak in most southern cities. The only catch: business travel restarts, so book city-center hotels 3 to 4 weeks out rather than last minute.
1. Lisbon
September Lisbon is August Lisbon minus the downsides. Highs around 27°C, ocean still warm enough for a Cascais afternoon, and the locals are back, which means the restaurants feel like themselves again. Terrace season runs all month.

2. Prague
Prague in September is the sweet spot between summer crowds and autumn chill: highs near 19°C, beer gardens still open, and the Charles Bridge actually crossable at 9am. The Dvořák Prague festival brings serious classical music to the Rudolfinum through the first half of the month.

3. Seville
September is when Seville becomes reasonable again. Early September still hits 32°C, but by the second half you get 28°C days built for courtyard-hopping and rooftop sunsets at Las Setas. Prices stay well below spring levels because the big festivals are months away.

How to play September
- Aim for the second half. Southern cities lose 3 to 5 degrees between September 1 and 30, which turns "hot" into "perfect".
- Book flights for Tuesday to Saturday stays. September weekend flights carry a business-travel premium that midweek departures dodge.
- Keep one indoor block per day from mid-month. The first autumn rain fronts arrive late September in central Europe; Prague especially.
