01

Historic Centre

The old core runs from the Grote Markt and its stepped-gable guild houses down past the cathedral and Groenplaats to the Scheldt quays, a few hundred metres of cobbles holding most of what people come for. Staying here puts the Rubens altarpieces, the Plantin-Moretus house and Het Steen within a five-minute walk, and the square softens once the day visitors head back to the station. It is the obvious base for a first, short trip.

Book it for

  • + Cathedral, Grote Markt, Plantin-Moretus and the river quays all within five minutes on foot
  • + The Meir shopping street runs straight east to Centraal station in about 15 minutes
  • + Hidden lanes like the Vlaeykensgang sit right off the main squares and cost nothing

Know before

  • Terraces on the Grote Markt trade on the view and price accordingly
  • Cobbles and narrow pavements are hard work with wheeled luggage
  • Groenplaats and the streets down to the Scheldt get loud on Friday and Saturday nights

02

Het Eilandje

The Eilandje is the oldest part of the port, a grid of nineteenth-century docks north of the centre that sat derelict for decades and was rebuilt from the 2000s around the MAS, the Red Star Line Museum and two marinas. It is open, modern and full of families and runners rather than tour groups, with warehouses converted into flats and restaurants along the quays. Base here if you want space and water views and do not mind a 20-minute walk into the old town.

Book it for

  • + MAS with its free rooftop panorama and the Red Star Line Museum both inside the district
  • + Quiet after dark, with the Bonapartedok and Willemdok marinas to walk
  • + Newer and larger rooms than the tight medieval core, often at better weekend rates

Know before

  • About 20 minutes on foot to the Grote Markt, or a short tram ride
  • Wind comes straight off the water with almost no shelter between the docks
  • Few everyday shops, and several blocks are still building sites

03

Het Zuid

Het Zuid was laid out in the 1880s on the site of a demolished citadel, which is why it has wide boulevards and open squares where the rest of Antwerp has lanes. It is the museum and restaurant quarter, with the KMSKA, the photography museum and M HKA within a few blocks of Marnixplaats and most of the city's better bars along the old dockside streets of Vlaamse Kaai and Waalse Kaai. Base here for a longer stay that wants good food and room to breathe over postcard cobbles.

Book it for

  • + KMSKA, FOMU and M HKA all walkable, plus the densest run of good restaurants in the city
  • + Bars on Vlaamse Kaai and Waalse Kaai stay busy well after the centre has shut
  • + Wide flat streets and trams that reach the Grote Markt in about 10 minutes

Know before

  • A 20-minute walk or a tram ride from the cathedral and the Grote Markt
  • Grand nineteenth-century blocks rather than medieval atmosphere
  • Weekend nights on the Kaaien are noisy for street-facing rooms

04

Diamond Quarter and Centraal

The blocks around Centraal station hold the diamond bourses on Hoveniersstraat and Schupstraat, the jewellery windows of Pelikaanstraat, the zoo immediately beside the station and a small Chinatown behind a Chinese gate on Van Wesenbekestraat. This is the practical base: the widest choice of hotels, trains and trams at the door, and a straight walk down the Meir to the cathedral. What it does not offer is charm.

Book it for

  • + Trains to Brussels, Bruges and Ghent leave from under your hotel
  • + Widest and generally cheapest hotel stock in the city, including reliable chains
  • + Flat 15-minute walk down the Meir to the cathedral and the Grote Markt

Know before

  • De Keyserlei and Koningin Astridplein are scruffy and bleak late at night
  • The diamond streets themselves are sealed and heavily secured, so there is little to see
  • Chain restaurants rather than the kitchens of Het Zuid

05

Zurenborg

Zurenborg is a residential pocket east of the centre built in one burst around 1900, where Cogels-Osylei and the streets beside it line up art nouveau, neo-Gothic and neoclassical mansions in a run you will not find anywhere else in Belgium. Daily life happens two streets away on Dageraadplaats, a leafy square ringed with cafes where Antwerpers actually eat. Base here for a quiet local stay with fast trains from Berchem station close by.

Book it for

  • + The Cogels-Osylei mansions and the Dageraadplaats terraces are two minutes apart
  • + Local prices on food and drink, well below Grote Markt level
  • + Antwerpen-Berchem station is nearby, useful for arriving or leaving by train

Know before

  • About 25 minutes on foot to the cathedral, or a tram ride each way
  • Almost no hotels, so it is apartments and small guesthouses
  • Little to do after dinner beyond the square itself
