FreeTipThis is the sunset viewpoint facing the bridge, and the crowd is young, local, and armed with supermarket beers. The kiosk sells drinks but closes earlier than you expect, so arrive by golden hour, buy first, then sit on the terrace steps.

The communal tables are a war zone between 12:30 and 14:00, so eat at 11:45 or after 14:30 and send one person to hold seats while the others order. The original Mercado da Ribeira produce hall next door is a cheaper, calmer coffee stop.

Ignore the takeaway line snaking down the street and walk straight in to the dining rooms, they seat around 400 and turn over fast. Order at the table, add the cinnamon and sugar from the counter shakers, and expect to pay about 1.40 EUR per tart.
