Central Market and Plecnik's Colonnade
TipThe open-air stalls run Monday to Saturday mornings and are packed away by early afternoon, so come before 11am and skip Sunday entirely, when the market is shut. Walk the length of Plecnik's riverside colonnade behind the stalls, a long covered arcade he designed in the 1930s, and go down the stairs to the fish market for a cheap fried-fish plate; the milk vending machine near the stalls dispenses fresh raw milk into a bottle, which is a very Slovenian thing to try.
Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna)
TipEvery Friday from mid-March to late October, weather permitting, dozens of Slovenian restaurants set up stalls on Pogacar Square by the market and cook outdoors from about 10am until 9pm. It is the best-value eating in the city and the one event to plan a Friday around: come hungry, bring cash as backup, and note it is cancelled outright in heavy rain, so check before you build an evening on it.
Plecnik House
TipThe architect lived in this Trnovo house from 1921 until his death in 1957, and it is preserved with his tools, drawings and conical study exactly as he left it. Entry is by timed guided tour only and the groups are small, so book a slot online a day or two ahead rather than turning up; it is closed on Mondays, and the walk down from the Old Town takes about 15 minutes through Krakovo's market gardens.
Metelkova Mesto
TipSquatted in 1993 when the Yugoslav army left the barracks, this autonomous art city is free to walk through at any hour, but it is two different places: a quiet mural-covered yard by day and a packed music and club quarter from about 10pm. Come in daylight for the sculpture and street art with a camera, then come back late for a concert; drinks cost a fraction of Old Town prices and most venues are cash-friendly.
