The baroque lanes curl along the right bank of the Ljubljanica under the castle hill, with the market at one end, the cathedral in the middle and terrace after terrace facing the water. It is the postcard and it knows it, but the streets are car-free and the scale is so small that the crowds never feel like a crush. Stay here if it is your first visit and you want to walk out of the door into the good part.

It is a flat seven to ten minute walk down to Preseren Square, and every Bled, Postojna and Piran bus leaves from the stand outside your door.
