Green Market (Pazar) and Fish Market (Peskarija)
TipThe open-air Pazar green market spills along the eastern palace wall with stalls of Dalmatian fruit, vegetables, olive oil, lavender and cheese, busiest and best-stocked in the morning before it winds down by early afternoon. A couple of minutes west, the covered Peskarija fish market sells the morning's Adriatic catch and famously has no flies, thanks to the sulphur spring next door, so come early for both and pick up a picnic for Marjan.

TipThis gallery west of the centre on the way to Marjan fills the seaside villa that Croatia's greatest modern sculptor built for himself with his own works, from monumental figures to intimate bronzes, set in a garden of statues above the sea. Entry is a few euros and the ticket also covers the nearby Kastelet chapel with his cycle of wooden reliefs; it closes on Mondays, so plan around that, and reach it on foot along the Meje seafront or on bus 12.
