What works well in April

With 10 rainy days and highs of 18°C, build your April days around indoor anchors and treat sunny windows as a bonus.

  • Bacvice Beach and Picigin

TipBacvice is the rare sandy beach on this pebble coast, a short walk east of the harbour, and its shallow water is the home of picigin, the local game where players in a ring keep a small ball from touching the water with acrobatic dives. It is free and playable year round, with locals splashing in even on New Year's Day, so come early for space in summer and watch a picigin game near the shallows for the real Split ritual.

  • Green Market (Pazar) and Fish Market (Peskarija)

TipThe open-air Pazar green market spills along the eastern palace wall with stalls of Dalmatian fruit, vegetables, olive oil, lavender and cheese, busiest and best-stocked in the morning before it winds down by early afternoon. A couple of minutes west, the covered Peskarija fish market sells the morning's Adriatic catch and famously has no flies, thanks to the sulphur spring next door, so come early for both and pick up a picnic for Marjan.

  • Ivan Mestrovic Gallery

TipThis gallery west of the centre on the way to Marjan fills the seaside villa that Croatia's greatest modern sculptor built for himself with his own works, from monumental figures to intimate bronzes, set in a garden of statues above the sea. Entry is a few euros and the ticket also covers the nearby Kastelet chapel with his cycle of wooden reliefs; it closes on Mondays, so plan around that, and reach it on foot along the Meje seafront or on bus 12.

  • Hvar Island Day Trip

TipThe fast Krilo or Jadrolinija catamaran reaches chic Hvar town in about an hour from Split's harbour, dropping you below its hilltop Spanish fortress, marble square and buzzing marina, and it is the classic island day out. Book the catamaran ahead online in summer because seats sell out, aim for an early boat and a late return to make a full day, and check the exact timetable, as sailings thin sharply outside the season.
