What works well in May

With highs around 15°C, May is outdoor weather: prioritize viewpoints, parks and long walks.

  • Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace

TipWander the medieval lanes to Stortorget, the small colourful square at the heart of the old town, then time your visit for the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace, which happens around 12:15 on weekdays and 13:15 on Sundays. The lanes are free to walk and near-empty before 9am; a palace ticket covers the state rooms, the treasury and the royal armoury if you want to go inside.

  • Djurgarden Island

TipThis green former royal hunting island holds most of the city's big museums plus woodland paths, waterfront cafes and space to picnic, and it is free to roam. Reach it on foot over the Djurgardsbron bridge, by tram line 7, or best of all by the ferry from Slussen, which is covered by an SL travelcard; rent a bike or a summer kayak to see the quieter far end.

  • City Hall (Stadshuset)

TipThe Nobel Prize banquet is held each 10 December in the Blue Hall of this landmark on Kungsholmen, and the interior, including the gold-mosaic Golden Hall, can only be seen on a guided tour, so book a slot as English tours run at set times through the day. In summer you can also climb the 106-metre tower for a viewpoint over the water and rooftops, on a separate timed ticket with limited capacity.

  • Monteliusvagen Viewpoint

TipThis short clifftop walkway along the north edge of Sodermalm gives the classic free postcard view across the water to Gamla Stan, the City Hall and Riddarholmen, and it is at its best at sunset. It is a five-minute stroll with a few benches; for a wider panorama continue west to Skinnarviksberget, a rocky outcrop that is the highest natural point in central Stockholm and a popular summer picnic spot.
