Shoulder season

Zurich in December

December forecastZRH · SWITZERLAND

December is a decent shoulder option for Zurich: fewer crowds, some trade-offs. Expect daytime highs around 3°C, nights near -1°C and roughly 10 rainy days across the month. Cold near 3C with a real chance of snow and the city at its most festive, when Christmas markets fill the squares and one of the biggest sets up right inside the main station under a crystal-hung tree. Rooms fill and prices rise around the markets and New Year, but the lit-up Bahnhofstrasse and old town are worth the chill.

What works well in December

With 10 rainy days and highs of 3°C, build your December days around indoor anchors and treat sunny windows as a bonus.

  • Lake Zurich Boat Trip

TipBoats leave from Burkliplatz at the foot of the Bahnhofstrasse, and the short round trip of about 1.5 hours is covered by a ZVV day pass or a normal transit ticket rather than a pricey tour fare. Sit on the upper deck for the view toward the Alps on a clear day, and note the longer lake cruises cost more and are not included in the city pass.

  • Kunsthaus Zurich

TipSwitzerland's largest art museum holds a deep run of Giacometti sculptures, Swiss painters like Hodler and Segantini and strong modern rooms, spread across the old building and the striking Chipperfield extension. Entry to the permanent collection is free on Wednesdays, and two hours is enough for the highlights; the two wings are linked by an underground passage, so start in whichever is quieter.

  • Swiss National Museum

TipThe castle-like building right behind the Hauptbahnhof runs through Swiss history from prehistory to the present, and is one of the better-value paid sights in a costly city. Under-16s go free, it is rarely crowded, and an hour or two here is a good rainy-day plan two minutes from the station; leave time for the courtyard and the calm park behind it.

  • Zurich West and Frau Gerolds Garten

TipThe old railway viaduct now shelters the Im Viadukt market hall of food stalls and design shops under its arches, and Frau Gerolds Garten stacks bars and street food in painted shipping containers alongside. It is free to wander, best in the late afternoon into evening, and the cheapest way to eat and drink well in this district; the garden runs a covered winter version too.
