01

Altstadt and Niederdorf

The medieval old town on the east bank of the Limmat is where Zurich began, a knot of cobbled lanes climbing from the river to the Grossmunster. The pedestrian Niederdorf strip runs through it with cafes, wine bars and small shops, quiet by day and lively at night. It is central and atmospheric, and puts most of the headline sights within a few minutes on foot.

Book it for

  • + Steps from the Grossmunster, the river crossings and the Fraumunster across the water
  • + Pedestrian lanes with the city's best concentration of bars and small restaurants
  • + Everything walkable, so you rarely need a tram from here

Know before

  • Some of the priciest rooms in the city and few real bargains
  • The Niederdorf can get loud on weekend nights near the bars
  • Cobbled hills and steps make it hard work with heavy luggage

02

City and Bahnhofstrasse

The west-bank centre runs from the Hauptbahnhof down the Bahnhofstrasse to the lake, taking in the Fraumunster, Paradeplatz and the main department stores. It is polished, practical and superbly connected, with trams from every corner and the station on your doorstep. Base here for convenience and easy day trips rather than old-town character.

Book it for

  • + The Hauptbahnhof next door for the airport, Lucerne and the Rhine Falls
  • + Trams and buses from Paradeplatz and Central reach the whole city
  • + Flat, wide and easy to walk with children or luggage

Know before

  • Business-district streets can feel quiet and shuttered after the shops close
  • Restaurants near the station and Bahnhofstrasse are tourist-priced
  • Less charm than the old town just across the river

03

Zurich West

The former industrial district north-west of the centre has turned its factories and railway viaduct into the city's creative and nightlife hub. The Viadukt arches hold a food market and design studios, Frau Gerolds Garten stacks bars and street food in shipping containers, and the clubs run late. It feels younger and grittier than the old town while staying easy to reach by tram.

Book it for

  • + The best concentration of bars, clubs and late-night eating in the city
  • + The Viadukt market hall and Frau Gerolds Garten for food and drinks
  • + Better-value and more inventive restaurants than the tourist centre

Know before

  • A 10 to 15 minute tram ride from the old town and lake
  • Club streets are noisy at night and dead on some weekday mornings
  • Still patchy in places, with building sites between the highlights

04

Seefeld

The upscale district along the east shore of the lake gathers the opera house, leafy streets and the long promenade toward the Zurichhorn park. It is calm, green and moneyed, with quiet cafes and easy access to the water and the swimming spots. Base here for a slower, lakeside trip within a short tram ride of the centre.

Book it for

  • + The lakeside promenade, parks and swimming areas on your doorstep
  • + Quiet, safe and green, a good fit for couples and families
  • + The opera house and boat piers a short walk away

Know before

  • One of the more expensive areas to sleep and eat
  • A tram ride rather than a walk to the old-town sights
  • Calm to the point of sleepy after dark

05

Langstrasse

District 4 around the Langstrasse is Zurich's multicultural quarter, a long strip of bars, cheap eats and late clubs that keeps its edge after dark. It is the grittiest central district and by far the best value for food and drink, with kebab counters, ethnic kitchens and dive bars a few minutes from the station. Base here to stretch a budget and stay close to the nightlife.

Book it for

  • + The cheapest central eating and drinking in an expensive city
  • + Walking distance to the Hauptbahnhof and a short hop to Zurich West
  • + A genuine, mixed local scene rather than a polished tourist one

Know before

  • The rowdiest and least tidy central area, busy and loud at night
  • The red-light and party crowd is not to everyone's taste
  • Fewer conventional sights in the immediate streets
