Dubrovnik City Walls Walk
TipBuy the walls ticket, which also covers Fort Lovrijenac, and start the roughly 2km circuit right at the 8am opening or in the last couple of hours before closing, because there is almost no shade and the walls bake and jam solid when the cruise crowds arrive by mid-morning. Allow about two hours, go anticlockwise from the Pile Gate entrance for the best rooftop-and-sea light, and carry water, as the marble steps climb hard in the heat.
Stradun (Placa)
TipThe Stradun is the old town's polished limestone main street, worn mirror-smooth, running the few hundred meters between the Pile and Ploce gates past Onofrio's Fountain and the bell tower. It is free and always open but shoulder-to-shoulder by day, so walk it at 7am for empty photos or late in the evening when it is floodlit and the day crowds have gone.
Franciscan Monastery and Old Pharmacy
TipJust inside the Pile Gate, the monastery's peaceful Romanesque cloister and small museum hold one of Europe's oldest working pharmacies, running since 1317, with old apothecary jars and instruments on display. Entry is a few euros, it is quiet compared with the Stradun crush outside, and the cloister garden is a cool shaded pause between the walls walk and the main street.
Fort Lovrijenac
TipThis freestanding fortress rears up on a 37-meter rock just outside the western walls, and its entry is included on the same ticket as the city walls, so keep your stub and visit the same day or within the ticket's validity. Climb it for the best head-on view back at the walls and the old town, film buffs will recognise it as the Red Keep of King's Landing, and it hosts open-air Hamlet during the Summer Festival.
