Enter from the quieter Via di San Gregorio gate rather than the packed Forum entrance near the Colosseum, and climb the Palatine first for the view down over the ruins before the midday sun. There is almost no shade, so bring water and a hat.

TipEntry is 5 EUR and free on the first Sunday of the month, but a timed slot is required on weekends and holidays, so book those ahead online. Come at opening (9am) or in the last hour before close to have the interior and its open oculus without a wall of selfie sticks. Trevi Fountain
TipGo at 7am or after midnight to actually see the marble, by mid-morning it is a solid crush ten people deep. Toss the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder if you want the tradition, and skip the overpriced cafes on the square.
