What works well in April

With highs around 19°C, April is outdoor weather: prioritize viewpoints, parks and long walks.

  • Colosseum

TipBuy the combined Colosseum-Forum-Palatine ticket online days ahead, it sells out and the on-site queue runs an hour or more in season. The timed slot is for the Colosseum only, so enter it first at your slot, then use the same ticket for the Forum and Palatine over the next 24 hours. The arena-floor and underground add-ons need a separate booking well in advance.

  • Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

TipCovered by the same combined Colosseum ticket, so do it the same day or the next within the 24-hour window. Enter from the quieter Via di San Gregorio gate rather than the packed Forum entrance near the Colosseum, and climb the Palatine first for the view down over the ruins before the midday sun. There is almost no shade, so bring water and a hat.

  • Pantheon

TipEntry is 5 EUR and free on the first Sunday of the month, but a timed slot is required on weekends and holidays, so book those ahead online. Come at opening (9am) or in the last hour before close to have the interior and its open oculus without a wall of selfie sticks. On a rainy day, watch the rain fall straight through the oculus onto the drained marble floor.

  • Trevi Fountain

TipGo at 7am or after midnight to actually see the marble, by mid-morning it is a solid crush ten people deep. Toss the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder if you want the tradition, and skip the overpriced cafes on the square. The water is not drinkable, but the free nasoni street fountains nearby are.
