Enter from the quieter Via di San Gregorio gate rather than the packed Forum entrance near the Colosseum, and climb the Palatine first for the view down over the ruins before the midday sun. Come at opening (9am) or in the last hour before close to have the interior and its open oculus without a wall of selfie sticks.
